How Much Experience Do You Already Have?
Okay, my friends! All I hear is griping and secret yearning for learning more.
Before we proceed, tell me: How much experience do you already have?
On a piece of paper, I want you write down the particular role you want to get promoted for, or for some activity that you want to do at your workplace that you feel like you are not qualified for at this time.
In the middle of the page, I want you to write that position / role title or the activity that you want to do. Got that? Okay. If you have more than one thing, please save that for another piece of paper and just follow through on this one we are doing as a demo for practice together.
Now, I want you to fold it into quarters. You should have 4 quarters now. Flip over your paper so the entire blank page is in front of you.
In quarter number one, I want you to write education (what I know).
In quarter number two, I want you to write experience (what I’ve done).
In quarter number three, I want you to write qualifications (what I qualify for).
In quarter number 4, I want you to write certifications (what I’m certified for).
I want you to not just write quantitative data (ex: graduating from college, having a degree, etc.). I want you to also include qualitative data (ex: volunteering at church for X event, etc.).
Fill it up!
When you are done, I want you to flip your page over to see how prepared you are, really, for that position you would like or the activity you want.
Tell me you’re surprised — I bet you didn’t even know you qualified.
This exercise is to encourage those who are not aware of their gifts to understand how qualified they really are.
Good luck for your promotion or activity! Be sure to put all of this in a document so you are considered seriously!
Love,
Sarah
