A Coach? Okay, let’s talk about it.
So coaching in general is a very simple thing.
You take your client from where they are, and you help them get to a place called peak performance. Usually there is more than one thing going on, so there is a lot of personal work involved. It’s different than therapy, where it focuses more on your performance.
When you succeed through coaching, it has more to do with accountability and goal setting.
If you already are good at keeping yourself accountable, and you can set goals and meet them, and you can improve on your own without an issue, then you do not need a coach.
It is easy to feel like you need one if you feel insecure, but if you are good with the above, then coaching is not the need you have.
A good coach, even one not in your industry, can really help you to improve, because they are good at assessing your problem and helping you to reach a solution over time.
It is less on “how to draw” and more on “making progress, looking good.”
A coach will push you beyond what your comfort zone is, so be aware if you don’t like being pressed into a challenge or stretch.
If you are very opposed to the rates of most coaches, you can ask one of your friends or peers or even managers to keep you accountable for things. It doesn’t have to be a ton. It can be, “hey, can you ask me if I finished next Friday?” and they’ll tell you, “yeah, okay, sure.” And they’ll remind you, and you can work your accountability through guys you already know and trust.
The basic focus of coaching would be:
What is your goal?
What is your main challenge in reaching that goal right now?
What can you do after this session to get closer to your goal by next session?
Can you push yourself to do double the amount of work you just committed to do? Let’s go for that.
So I will call you on Friday at 3 PM to see if you did what you committed to do just now. Okay? Okay. Good. See you next time.
You can do any of this with a good friend, partner, peer, or boss. Nearly everyone who cares for you will want to help out, so you can try this first to see if you like coaching. You may be happy with your immediate support coaches in your friend group!
If you really love it, consider connecting with a professional coach, as they will probably be delighted to work with someone of your caliber.
