How long does it take to go from concept to completion?
The answer to that is anywhere from seconds to decades.
How hard is it to go from concept to completion?
The answer to that is anywhere from easy to agonizing, and there is no compromise!
So, depending on if you are a solo entrepreneur type or an AAA video game company, there are agonies to the entire process from concept to completion. We shall not talk about the sweat, blood, and tears…yet.
For honest reasons, I wanted to write something encouraging to people who probably feel like their IP has taken them by storm, and sometimes the storm was 20 years…and there really isn’t an end in sight, and the demands whirl higher and higher…and….still no end in sight.
What is the key to bringing a concept to completion?
Love.
More love.
Any love you have kept back.
All the love you’ve got. Plus your partner’s!
It is no joke, working on something for a company or yourself for 20 years.
You love it, you’re proud of it – just, everything.
And when you feel like you’ve got no more love to give?
What is the key to bringing a concept to completion?
Hate.
More hate.
Any hate you’ve seriously kept back to be polite.
All the hate you’ve got. Plus your partner’s.
You hate it, you’re embarrassed about it – just, everything.
And when you feel like you’ve got no more hate to give?
What is the key to bringing a concept to completion?
Happiness.
I give up-ness.
I thought I’d never be happy with this…
I’m happy with everything I’ve got. And so is my partner.
You’re happy about it, you’re happy to do it and finish – just, everything.
And when you feel like you’ve got all the happiness the world could give?
You’ll get another IP, knocking at your door, asking for your heart, begging for your mind’s best line.
It is less about the actual process and how precise and accurate we ought to be. What brings on our determination to go through the dull stuff? The hard stuff? The agonizing stuff? Our love, our hate, and our happiness with our IP.
In a nutshell, you have to bring all of you to the table. You cannot hold any part of yourself back from what you are creating, because it is yours.
From concept to completion, you must claim your IP as your own and not let go. Even if you swear you’ll never finish. That IP will grip you until you go.
Don’t be afraid to feel spent as you work on your IP. It’s perfectly normal, and you won’t feel that way forever. It’s like taking care of an infant. Takes everything out of you in the beginning, but later on, you see the little one grow up strong.
Love,
Sarah
